Zune HD to get Twitter, Facebook as Microsoft abandons ‘squirting’

One of Microsoft's big bets when it decided to challenge Apple's iPod in 2006 was a feature known as Zune-to-Zune wireless sharing -- or "squirting," as Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer dubbed it. People could use the built-in Wi-Fi to send a full song to another Zune device nearby, for as many as three playbacks.

FLASHBACK: Remember When MySpace Mattered?

My, what a year to forget for MySpace: A year ago, MySpace at least had the bragging rights that it was still almost twice as big as Facebook in the U.S., where ad dollars exist.

But fast-forward a year later, and Facebook's 88 million July U.S. unique visitors trump MySpace's 68 million by a wide margin, according to comScore.

ROBERT SCOBLE: FriendFeed is now Facebook’s “official” R&D department!

When I heard the news I was walking through San Antonio’s Hard Rock Cafe looking at Kurt Cobain’s high school photograph. Wow. FriendFeed was purchased by Facebook.

I quickly wrote a DM to Paul Buchheit and Bret Taylor, co-founders and said “call me.” They did, and I got one of the first interviews.

Basically they did not tell me much other than FriendFeed would keep on going on for the indefinite future.

GAME CHANGER: Facebook Acquires FriendFeed

Facebook has acquired FriendFeed, we’ve learned. We’re gathering details now.

At this point details on the acquisition are still very sparse, but it’s clearly a good match. Over the last year or so, Facebook has “borrowed” quite a few of features that FriendFeed popularized, including the ‘Like’ feature and an emphasis on real-time news updates.

Facebook: Hook Up and Break Up

Never mind the perils of cyber-stalking, cyber-bullying and posting photos that could endanger your future job prospects: Facebook could be ruining your relationship and driving you toward compulsively jealous behavior.

MAIL DROP: British troops encouraged to use Twitter

British troops are being encouraged by the Ministry of Defence to use Twitter and Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends.

In a "liberalisation" of its social networking policy, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that British troops are no longer required to seek permission to use the sites but asks personnel to use common sense over the amount of detail revealed.

COLD WAR: Russian activist responsible for Twitter and Facebook's denial of service attack

A Russian activist blogger with accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal and Google's Blogger and YouTube was targeted in a denial of service attack that led to the site-wide outage at Twitter and problems at the other sites on Thursday, according to a Facebook executive.

Facebook Nearly as Large as U.S. Population!

(CNN) – Facebook’s user base is nearly as large as the U.S. population and, for the first time, the site has turned a profit.
Facebook now has 300 million users — almost as many as the population of the United States.

That was the double-barreled announcement Tuesday from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who thanked the site’s users for helping its online community cross the 300 million threshold. There are about 307 million people living in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Facebook: Cash-Flow Positive With 300 Million Users

Facebook just announced it has crossed the 300 million user mark and that it became cash-flow positive last quarter.

"This is important to us because it sets Facebook up to be a strong independent service for the long term," said Mark Zuckerberg in a statement.

A reminder: that doesn't mean Facebook is generating "earnings" as they are normally defined. It means they're bringing in more cash than they're burning, which is actually more important.

U.S. Prez Praises Twitter, Google & Facebook — But Not Microsoft's Xbox

Does today’s speech from President Barack Obama to school children across the United States need any more controversy? Having listened to it, I personally can’t see many parents objecting. But I could see one tech company not happy: Microsoft. Competitors like Google got called out as “good” things to aspire to while a Microsoft’s Xbox was something he suggested should be turned off.

From his prepared remarks, which should be pretty close to the exact speech he delivered: Microsoft gets the bad news early:
